The Different Types of Esophageal Surgery

Esophageal cancer needs treatments like chemotherapy and radiation. But stage two level of esophageal cancer requires surgery by a competent oncologist. Radiation and chemotherapy are used to prevent cancer from reappearing, before considering the option of surgery for the second time.

When the cancer germs form in the esophagus, the doctors remove the lymph nodes situated around the esophagus to be on the safe side and to be sure that germs do not spread to the nearby nodes.

The following surgical procedures are performed to cure esophageal cancer:

1. Open Esophagectomy -
At the time of performing the open esophagectomy, the surgeon will remove the maximum part of the esophagus and the measurement will depend upon how much the tumor has spread. Incisions are made to be done in the abdomen and neck or abdomen and chest, depending on the position of cancer. In some extreme cases, the incisions are to be made in all three of these places.

2. Minimally Invasive Esophagectomy -
In case of the affected area being small, the minimally invasive esophagectomy can be performed instead of the open surgery. The procedure is done by making a few of the small incisions instead of a large one. A laparoscope is a tube with a camera attached to its end and is used by the oncologists to remove the tumor. The part affected by the cancer is removed and the rest is attached again to the remaining esophagus.

3. Endoscopic Mucosal Resection -
EMR is a minimally invasive way to cure esophageal cancer at the early stage. It is even used during the biopsy when an endoscope or a thin tube is slid down the throat. The tube has required attached instruments which helps to remove the tumor.
