How is Astigmatism Diagnosed and Treated?

Generally, the lens and cornea and equally curved in all directions. But, when you suffer from Astigmatism, an imperfection is noticed in the curvature of the eye’s lens or cornea. In this case, the light that enters through your eyes gets refracted as the cornea or lens is not evenly curved.
How is it diagnosed?
# Vision test- In this test, patients are told to read letters from a chart 20 feet away. If you have a 20/20 vision, you can see from 20 feet away. Whereas, if your vision is 20/80, you have to be 20 feet away to see what a normal person sees from 80 feet away.
# Keratometry- This machine helps to measure the flattest and steepest curve of your cornea. The measurement helps the doctor to fit contact lenses after eye surgery.
# Corneal topography- To get the most detailed information about the shape of the cornea, doctors take help of corneal topography. The device collects measurements and the computer builds a map of the cornea using the data.
How is it treated?
# Eyeglass lenses- The lenses are curved as per the shape of lens or cornea to prevent the blurred vision. In the beginning, the walls or floors may look tilted, but these symptoms disappear after a week or so.
# Contact lenses- These are also helpful, but you require a special pair of them. Whenever you blink, the contacts rotate. Softer lenses, called toric lenses are designed to come back to the spot every time. If astigmatism is severe, hard gas permeable contact lenses are a good choice
# Laser surgery- In this procedure, the doctor uses a device to develop a thin flap on the cornea. This reshapes your cornea and helps you to focus better on light rays.
