Contact Dermatitis - Know All about Skin Rashes!

Do you get an itch when wearing nickel jewelry? Or, get skin rashes using a certain cosmetic product? If yes, you are probably suffering from contact dermatitis. This condition occurs when you come in contact with a substance or chemical that causes an outburst on your skin.

A Brief About its Types and Causes

* Allergic contact dermatitis: When your skin gets exposed to a foreign substance, it develops an allergic reaction called allergic contact dermatitis. This basically happens when your body comes in contact with latex, nickel and gold jewelry, skincare products, poison ivy or oak.

* Irritant contact dermatitis: This condition develops when your skin comes in contact with toxic substances like bleach, detergents, kerosene, pepper spray, battery acid and more.

* Photo Contact Dermatitis: This is a rare condition that results in an irritated skin when the active component in a skincare product gets exposed in the sun.

What are the Symptoms?

The possible signs of allergic contact dermatitis are skin redness, swelling in the eyes and face, itching, dry and flaky skin, hives, and oozing blisters. However, the symptoms slightly differ in irritant contact dermatitis. It comes with open sores, cracking skin and blisters.

How to Prevent It?

If you have a sensitive skin, you need to keep the irritants at bay. For instance, you may switch to vinyl gloves if you are experiencing an allergic reaction to latex. Long sleeve shirts or t-shirts can protect you from sun exposure. This also reduces the chance of your skin coming in contact with toxic materials present in the environment. Stop using a product immediately if you notice redness or swelling in the skin.
